Soaring
Eagle 6/5/13 Commencement Celebration and Workshop
By Roy Cook I have always been fond of the term commencement. Education is a lifetime opportunity and challenge. Many of our Soaring Eagle students and some adults like Tina Morales are continuing their journey on the education trails. To sweeten these commitments tonight there are three birthdays with cake and a very tasty and generous potluck at the June 5, 13, Ballard center Old Town SDUSD Soaring Eagle dance workshop. After the feast and Student Commencement recognition certificates and gifts were awarded.
The Green River singers sang songs to honor: Tina, her Mother and all the children to inspire them to keep their feet moving on toward their educational future. Preceding activities included blessings and announcements of upcoming pow wow events and recognition of the Soaring Eagle youth that have been selected for responsible appointments and scholarship.
This evening was a fine reflection of the devotion and dedication of our Soaring Eagle parents, volunteers, Indian Education staff, dance instructor and mentors. Our next SE summer dance workshop will be in Pepper Grove, Balboa Park on June 19 at 6pm. Contact: the SDUSD Indian Education program coordinator: Connie Greybull at 619-293-4427. The Soaring Eagle youth program is all about the children. This quality was evident in the initiative, joy, pride of tribal identity and participation from beginning to end of the parents and children of the Soaring Eagles. For Soaring Eagle contact, presentations or information call Vickie Gambala, 619-266-2887 also VickieGambala@gmail.com. Thank you all for being there this special night for the Indian children. It is all good, Mehan and Aho. |
