Dancing, Families and Hot Soup Are Good For the Spirit

Our last Workshop in October was very satisfying. Our new approach is to dance first and then eat. Most of our youth have caught on to the new routine and lead the stretching to start things off. We had a guest instructor, Cheyenne, who did an outstanding job on the basic Fancy Shawl steps and helped to build confidence in our young dancers. From there all got shawls and tried them out to some hot songs. This pattern continued as several new students found a place at the drum, too! It's a traditional method of learning by observation and participation.

Steve followed up by demonstrating the basic traditional dance steps. Several times Terry shared some basics on song structure and how to listen for the song and the drum beats to stop. All important elements of all the dance styles.

A song from Steve on the flute brought us all into our meal time and a blessing for the food and all those gathered. We were glad to see Johnny Hood with us and thanks to him and Melisa for sharing the pictures included here.

While finishing up the meal the Singers started up more songs and the dancers were back into the circle. They also took some Special Requests. Such enthusiasm touches the heart and tells us these traditions will endure.

We all had a great time sharing and being together in our Indian community. As often happens, we had new families and individuals making their way to Soaring Eagles for the first time. Welcome! It makes us feel good in our hearts that the Soaring Eagles has the foundation and commitment of so many to be there and endure. Thanks again to all who helped make that possible and we hope to see you at the next Soaring Eagles Workshop.
